|Sunday Madrid - Segovia - El Escorial - Madrid September 23, 2007
This morning travel to Segovia to visit the former palace, Alcazar. Visit El Escorial and enjoy a tour including the monastery, church and the palace complex built by Philip II. A vaulted library contains a priceless collection of more than 60,000 ancient books. The monastery itself houses a wealth of paintings and tapestries, and the mausoleum beneath the church's altar serves as a burial place for Spanish kings. Then make a stop at the gigantic civil war memorial, the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen), built by General Franco. Known as a monument to Franco's victory in the Civil War, it was constructed with the forced labor of prisoners of war.|
