| A group of 12 women met at the home of Betty Sternad on March 18, 1966, and the Wilton Woman's Club began. On April 1, 1966, Betty was elected President of the Club, and the 21 charter members approved by-laws. Formally called "The Wilton Woman's Club, Inc.," the club joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs/Connecticut (GFWC/CT) on April 25, 1966. The club's first general meeting was held on May 13th at the Wilton Congregational Church. Approximately 100 women attended. In 2002, the Club voted to end its affiliation with GFWC. The club's stated objectives were to bring women together for educational purposes and to be of service to the community. It has since established a proud tradition of volunteer service and financial support for various community projects, including Merwin Meadows, the Adult Center, Adopt-a-Spot, Wilton's first bicycle path, emergency services ambulance equipment, and, with emergency services, creation of the Vial of Life medical information program. All members support the club's projects and fundraisers, both financially and through volunteer hours. The club's major fundraiser is an annual art and craft fair. In 1995, the club enlarged the fair and moved it to the Wilton High School Field House. Now known as the Autumn Art and Craft Festival (AACF), it is a juried show featuring high quality crafters from throughout the United States. The club's Philanthropy Committee distributes net proceeds from the show to local charitable and community organizations. Membership for 2004-2005 is over 150 and is divided into five categories: Active, Inactive, Professional, Sustaining, and Honorary. Over its 38-year history, the club has continued to grow and adapt to the changing lifestyles and interests of its members. |
